Personal computing for students in La Paz, Mexico

Personal computers have simplified our life. However, many people don't realize that 70% of the world's population still doesn't have access to a computer. With your help, we are going to provide personal computing for 3,500 students distributed in 30 schools in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico, that have been denied a proper education due to lack of tools to maximize their human potential.

With successful experiences in over 20 countries in regions like Africa, Middle East, South America and Mexico, we seek for your help to disrupt the global education system and bring down the walls that separate us all.

The Project

Keepod will provide the necessary training to Enseña Por México’s PEMs, so afterwards they can teach students to learn how to use Keepod’s technology in order to benefit their academic performance and their openness to modern technologies. In the same way, the project aims to give the students access to information and didactic contents useful for their performance and knowledge, aligned with Teach For Mexico’s curriculum.

As a secondary objective, the infrastructure of the selected schools will benefit by providing access to the equipment necessary to cover the needs of the project and that may be of the student's use (Internet access, refurbished computers, among others).

Deployed by Teach For Mexico

Teach For Mexico is an NGO whose part of the Teach For All global network with presence in more than 50 countries, and seeks to improve Mexico’s education system by making it more personal through autonomous learning. In less than 6 years, Teach For Mexico has created a network of more than 60,000 students.

The project itself will be implemented on site by Teach For Mexico’s 51 PEMs or tutors who will be leading the classes with the help of Keepod. These 51 PEMs will be previously trained extensively so they can further train the students in the schools in La Paz. Should the entirety of the crowdfunding campaign be raised, the project will extend to 30 schools and over 3,500 students in La Paz, Baja California in Mexico with the possibility of expanding to other states where Teach For Mexico currently works. Most of the 30 schools already have connection to the net, and all the schools that do not, will be connected and budgeted so there is more exploit of the technology.

Why we use Keepod?

Personal computing is a tool that should be available to all people. By shifting the focus from the hardware to the software and by separating the two, Keepod makes access to personal computing affordable for users at a fraction of the cost per device. Combined with refurbished computer station, users will finally have access to affordable personal computing.

Keepod users can insert the Keepod device in any computer turning it to their own personal computer. Each computer can serve dozens of people and each person can work from any computer. Children in schools can use the school computer to do their assignments, research or benefit from endless online educational tools. These children can also use the computers of the community center. It will also provide computer access to Keepod users from the community, providing them new means to learn, communicate, operate and much more.

With this method, access to personal computing is made available, opening new doors for those people and creating more equality in the world.

Project roadmap

Risks and challenges

Since we ourselves control production and shipping, the only risk involved in the project would be a governmental chance in La Paz, Baja California that would prevent us from entering the community (the government in that specific area is not going to change on a regular basis for the next two years). However, in the unlikely case that something like this might happen, we would have access to other states where Teach for Mexico operates and we would proceed to implement the project in another community.
