How do I setup my computer to permanently boot from my Keepod?

Before continuing, we recommend you read the section on booting and BIOS.

Note: Keepod-Certified Refurbished Computers are already set up to permanently boot from your Keepod

For Windows 7 or below:

  1. Make sure that that the computer is turned off.
  2. Plug the Keepod into the computer’s USB port.
  3. Turn the computer on.
  4. Wait for the first screen to pop up. For a few seconds, it will tell you which key to press in order to reach the boot menu or BIOS settings. Press that key.
  5. After a few seconds, a list of choices will appear. Move the USB drive upwards on the list to the ‘primary boot device’ position.
  6. After you saved the changes, you can exit the settings.
  7. A menu will appear that allows you to either “Start Keepod” or access the settings by choosing “Settings.” If you do not make a selection within the first few seconds, Keepod will automatically start.

The following video explains the setup in more detail.

Note: a permanent boot of Keepod can easily be undone. If you decide that you want to start your computer without using Keepod after setting up a permanent boot, you can either simply start the computer without your Keepod, or restore the original boot sequence in the BIOS, as explained in the instructions.

For Windows 8 or higher:

  1. Make sure that that the computer is turned off.
  2. Plug the Keepod into the computer’s USB port.
  3. Turn the computer on. Press and hold the Shift key.
  4. Select “Troubleshoot” and “Advanced options”.
  5. Enter the BIOS Settings by choosing  “UEFI Firmware settings”.
  6. Select “Boot” in the BIOS Settings and enable “Launch CSM” (Compatibility Support Module).
  7. Move the USB drive upwards on the list to the ‘primary boot device’ position.
  8. Enter “Security” and disable “Secure Boot Control.”
  9. Save the changes and exit the settings.
  10. A menu will appear that allows you to either “Start Keepod” or access the settings by choosing “Settings.” If you do not make a selection within the first few seconds, Keepod will automatically start.

If you can’t tell which model your Windows computer is:

In order to tell which model your Windows computer is, simply start the computer and read the text that first appears on your screen. If your computer screen reads “Windows 7” when you start the computer, your computer system is a Windows 7 model.

For Mac:

It is not possible boot permanently from a USB device with Mac OS. You will have to follow the one-time setup process each time you want to use Keepod with your Mac.
